English

Our English Curriculum

At Langafel C of E Primary School, we believe every child is a reader and a writer in the making. Our English Curriculum is designed to inspire a love of reading, develop rich vocabulary, and build confident, capable writers. To support this, we follow three high-quality programmes: Pathways to Read, Pathways to Write, and Accelerated Reader.

Our Aim

Through a rich English curriculum and inspiring texts, we aim for every child to:
• Love reading
• Enjoy writing
• Build vocabulary and comprehension
• Become confident, fluent communicators

Together, we nurture a lifelong love of language and reading.

Pathways to Read

We use Pathways to Read from Year 2 onwards to teach reading skills in a structured, systematic way.

This programme helps children to:
• Build strong comprehension skills
• Develop vocabulary and language understanding
• Enjoy high‑quality texts
• Strengthen discussion and inference skills

Children learn through modelled reading, discussion, and targeted questioning so they can understand and explain what they read.

Pathways to Write

Pathways to Write underpins our writing curriculum from Reception to Year 6.

It provides:
• High‑quality texts to inspire writing
• Progression in grammar, spelling, and sentence structure
• Modelled and shared writing opportunities
• Chances to write for different audiences and purposes

This ensures pupils develop strong writing skills and confidence in expressing themselves.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader

From Year 3 onwards, and for confident younger readers, we use Accelerated Reader (AR) to help children choose books matched to their reading level and interests.

Accelerated Reader helps to:
• Match pupils with appropriate books
• Promote regular reading
• Monitor progress in comprehension
• Motivate and celebrate success

Children complete a short quiz after each book, helping teachers track understanding and celebrate progress.

Writing Lounge

🖋️ Introducing the Langafel Writing Lounge!

At Langafel every child will be able to participate in a  Langafel Writing Lounge creative writing session— a brand-new weekly session where every class will spend time writing purely for enjoyment and creativity.

Children can choose what and how they write: a story, diary entry, letter, poem, comic, or even a “100-word challenge.” There are no success criteria or red pens — just imagination, expression, and a love of writing.

Each week, we’ll celebrate a piece of writing in our newsletter and on our new Writing Lounge display board, so everyone can enjoy the wonderful words our pupils create.

At Langafel, we believe every child is an author in the making — and the Writing Lounge is where their stories begin. 🌟✏️

Why We Use Letter-Join to Teach Handwriting

At our school, we want every child to develop clear, confident and fluent handwriting. To support this, we have chosen to use Letter-Join, a handwriting programme used by schools across the UK.  Letter-Join provides a consistent, structured approach from Early Years through to Key Stage 2. It teaches correct letter formation, joins, and cursive script through engaging animations, interactive activities, and practical guidance. This helps children understand how letters are formed, why they are written in specific ways, and how to build good writing habits for life.

We chose Letter-Join because it:

  • Follows a clear, research-informed progression
  • Supports all learners, including those who need extra practice
  • Provides engaging digital resources that make learning fun
  • Ensures consistency across the school so children develop a fluent, joined style
  • Helps children build confidence, pride and accuracy in their handwriting

By using Letter-Join, we aim to give every child the tools they need to write neatly, comfortably and confidently as they move through school.

Spellings

Why We Use Sir Linkalot for Spelling

At our school, we use Sir Linkalot to support children in becoming confident, accurate spellers. We chose this award-winning programme because it makes spelling memorable, fun and accessible for every learner.

Sir Linkalot teaches spellings through short, engaging animations that help children make strong visual and verbal connections—known as “links”—so tricky words become easier to remember. This approach particularly supports children who struggle with traditional rote learning, as it taps into memory, imagination and humour.

The programme covers everything from common exception words to punctuation and vocabulary, ensuring children build secure foundations they can apply in all areas of their writing. Children enjoy using Sir Linkalot both in class and at home, and teachers can easily track progress and revisit areas where extra practice is needed.

Overall, Sir Linkalot helps us promote a love of words while strengthening spelling skills across the school.
