Beaver
Teacher: Mrs Nayemah
Beaver class is a KS1 class within the SLIC provision. Our class currently consists of nine pupils, between Years 1-4, each with a primary diagnosis of ASD.
In Beaver class, we have a very structured day to help our pupils understand and predict the environment and what is happening around them. We use visual schedules, Now and Next and Start-Finish boards, timers and song cues to help them understand what is happening and help them understand their routine, providing predictability. This supports our pupils with managing transitions and changes and also supports their wellbeing.
We design our activities to be exciting and fun through Attention Autism, and ensure regular movement breaks takes place in order to engage and sustain our pupils' active engagement, in all subjects across the curriculum. On occasions we need to bring learning to the pupils rather than expecting them to join a group session, therefore, we are flexible to allow for this as and when pupils require it. We also encourage and support play based learning to facilitate social interaction and encourage early play and learning.
Some of our pupil’s access mainstream, where appropriate, to further develop their learning and social skills.
Having effective communication is paramount importance in our classroom, therefore, we communicate using speech, signing (Makaton), core boards and through body language. We also use visual to help support spoken language.
