Welcome to Koala class and a warm welcome to families as the children move into more formal learning in Key stage 1.

This year we will be exploring a variety of exciting topics alongside learning to read, write and develop fundamental maths skills. In year 1, we blend adult directed learning with a child-initiated learning approach where the children will have a mixture of formal class-based learning experiences as well as a well-resourced and large garden area that the children can explore and choose their own ‘learning jobs’. Koala class is also fortunate enough to have both a wide variety of plants and herbs for the children to take care of and even our very own class pet - Dave the corn snake.

Phonics - Learning to read and write is the greatest gift we can offer our children. In year 1, children learn the rest of the phonemes (sounds) and graphemes(letters) that make up the English language. This will unlock the world for them, so regular reading and practicing of these is important. I will be sending home the new sounds we have learnt each Friday on class dojo.

Homework - Children will be bringing home a levelled reading book each Friday to share with their families, we ask that these are returned the following Tuesday each week.

PE- Pe will be on a Monday; forest school will be on a Friday. Children should come dressed in their PE kits on these days.

Attendance - All our lessons follow a spiral approach, where new learning builds upon the previous days, therefore, consistent attendance is vital as this is the best way to ensure all children reach their full potential.  Minimum expectation is 96%
