Wolf Class

Teacher: Miss Smith and Miss Culver
Year 2 – Wolf Class
Our teaching and learning follows the National Curriculum objectives for Year 2, ensuring that children experience engaging, creative and inspiring opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills. As children enter their final year of Key Stage 1, we build upon previous years’ learning, allowing children to revisit, consolidate and further develop the skills and knowledge they have already acquired.
Topics of study in Year 2 include Everyday Materials, UK Seasons and the Polar Regions, Space Travel and Clarice Cliff. Through our topic lessons, which incorporate a range of foundation subjects including Art, Design and Technology, Geography and History, children will transfer skills from previous year groups before progressing and developing these alongside their new knowledge. The use and application of subject-specific vocabulary is an important part of our learning, enabling children to develop their understanding and confidently use new terminology in context.
In Science, children will investigate Everyday Materials and compare the seasons in the UK with the Polar Regions, developing their understanding of the world around them. Our History learning takes children on a journey through space travel, exploring significant people, events and developments. In Art, children will be inspired by Clarice Cliff, exploring her distinctive designs, patterns and use of colour. In RE, children will explore Christianity and beliefs about God, considering Christian stories, beliefs and ideas.
Reading continues to be a key focus in Year 2. We follow the Little Wandle phonics and reading programme, supporting children to develop their phonics knowledge, fluency, comprehension and confidence. Children access books carefully matched to their reading level, giving them opportunities to practise and apply the skills they have been taught while developing a love of reading.
As children progress through their final year of KS1, we place great importance on developing their independence, responsibility and resilience. Children are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their learning, make choices, persevere with challenges and reflect on their progress. We aim to support every child as an individual, creating an inclusive environment where all children feel valued, supported and confident in their abilities.
By the end of Year 2, we aim to have provided children with memorable, engaging and purposeful learning experiences, while developing the skills and confidence they need to become independent and responsible learners. We want our Wolf Class children to be ready to make a successful transition into Lower Key Stage 2, excited and prepared for the next stage of their learning journey at Langafel.
